Happy Spaghetti Wednesday!

spaghetti dinner night before Thansgiviing

KIds Eat First

I posted last year about my family’s Thanksgiving tradition that we call Spaghetti Wednesday. I thought I’d take some time to explain what it is, how it started and why it’s been such a great tradition for all of us that we all love.

When Mark and I bought this house more than 18 years ago, we were both working and not unlike many new couples, spent most of our holidays running around. It wasn’t only his family and my family, it was his family, then my dad, then on to my aunt’s house where my brothers and I always ended up to relax and laugh with our closest cousins. Since my mom would usually be there, that’s where I typically saw her.

The first year in our new house, I thought it might be nice to have my side of the family over the night before Thanksgiving so Mark and I  had less running around to do on the actual holiday. Seeing my family the night before Thanksgiving would eliminate the running on Thanksgiving day. My side of the family wasn’t really adamant about anything, though they wanted to see us and we wanted to spend time with them. If everyone came to my house the night before Thanksgiving, I could see my brothers, mom, dad and stepmom the night before Thanksgiving, have dinner with Mark’s family on Thanksgiving day then head down to my aunt’s after dinner to hang out with the cousins.

My family's night-before-Thanksgiving tradition

Hanging out and visiting

My side of the family was all for it. Since most of my brothers were still single their only plans were meeting friends out for the biggest bar night of the year but dinner didn’t interfere with that.

I debated for weeks about what to serve and decided that spaghetti and meatballs was easy and everyone could easily contribute a component of the meal…salad, bread, appetizer and dessert. The spaghetti and meatballs part is so easy to make ahead.

As we’ve added spouses and children to the mix, we’ve grown beyond the dining room table and serve the dinner buffet style now.

Those cousins that we grew up with have been joining us for dessert for the past 5-10 years because it’s just easier for their families, too.

My mom now lives a few houses away, so she hosts dessert which gives me and Mark a chance to clean up, visit with everyone as guests and go home when we’re tired.

It’s been great for all of the brothers and their spouses who appreciate spending time together and being able to spend Thanksgiving with one family. It just makes the day easier for everyone.

I tell everyone about this tradition and so far, it hasn’t taken hold. One day it will and I hope to get the credit. You can thank me later.

So, Happy Spaghetti Wednesday everyone! Be safe!

ping pong on the dining room table?

Thinking of Ping Pong for Christmas….

ping pong on the dining room table?

Portable Ping Pong Anyone?

…but don’t have the room?

We got one of these last year and it has been an awesome, durable toy that everyone in the family loves! Our house is waaaay too small for a full-sized ping pong table. I considered getting an actual tennis-table-top, like this but felt like it would be bulky and cumbersome.

The dimensions of the portable table aren’t that much bigger than our dining room table with the extension, so I went with just the net/paddle/balls. I figured if it was a dud, we were only out $25. Although our dining room set was a hand-me-down, this hasn’t scratched or damaged the surface or edges at all. The net holders are plastic but have held up well.

Luke’s tennis buddy stayed with us for a couple of nights and they spent nearly every waking hour playing ping pong. It took Adam a couple of games to adjust to the size of the table since he has a full-sized table at home but then they competed evenly.

Just in case you’re still skeptical, check this out…..   Having trouble viewing the video clip, click here.

In case you’re keeping score, that’s Mark 2, Luke 1….and Luke’s playing righty. He usually plays Mark lefty.

I thought it would be appropriate to revive this post which is a first-hand account of my father-in-law’s experience during World War II. You might especially appreciate it if you’re a history buff. He had great stories of convalescing including taking a golf lesson from Ben Hogan and being sung to by Doris Day at his bedside. Pretty cool. His recovery took months and he nearly lost both legs. But somehow, they were able to save them.

Thank you to anyone who has served our country in any branch of the armed services and their families. We owe you everything.

Hannah birthday photo

She’s 16 and She Truly is Sweet!

Hannah birthday photo

Happy Birthday Sweet 16 Year Old!

(I really did write this on Hannah’s birthday (September 11) but got distracted by the day, which is ok because it was all about Hannah. She competed in the sectional tournament for tennis. The tournament started on her birthday and ended the next day and she is SECTION CHAMP! So proud of her and how she carries herself and how nice she is to all of her opponents and coaches. The coach’s wife told me that a player from another school told her how nice Hannah is and how the other girls across the section appreciate how nice she is). I would consider that a shameless brag except it’s truly how Hannah was born…….16 years ago! AACK!

Happy Birthday to Hannah! This birthday is especially sweet since Hannah’s back home with us after spending 2 years at a performing arts high school. She counted the hours that she spent on a bus over those two years and it equals about 1 1/2 months of her life. I say it’s more like 3 months since I only counted waking hours. Either way, it was a lot of time and we both appreciate how much more of it she has now.

This kid continues to blow me away with her confidence, her resourcefulness, her sweetness and her maturity. She’s still fun and joyful as ever.

I think I’ve bragged about her plenty in this space. If you don’t remember, you can read about her here, here, here and here.

They say a picture paints a thousand words, if that’s true, this girl has painted billions. Photography has turned into her primary passion thanks to my mom who gave her her first camera as a birthday gift. I was too practical to get one for her since I already had a point-and-shoot. Shame on me. I’ll leave you with some of her recent projects and photos.

15 Years and 20 Years! Wow and Wow!

Luke Mountains

This is the best recent photo I have…really. 15 year old boys do not cooperate for photos

Happy Birthday to Luke! It’s true, 15 years really does go fast! He was born on our 5th wedding anniversary, yes….today we’ve been married for 20 YEARS! What, what?

Because of that fact, I always projected his age with our corresponding anniversary date…he’ll be 5 on our 10th anniversary, 10 on our 15th…15 on our 20th…and I’ve always tried to picture him at those ages. I think he’s pretty much how I imagined…fun, smart, athletic, polite, industrious, responsible and a loyal friend. I have to admit, I did not anticipate the intense goofiness but I’m used to it by now and am thinking he’ll always have it.

Cincy Tennis Family

After a fun day of watching matches and Federer practice!

Ever since we’ve been married, Mark and I have wanted to go to the pro tournament in Cincinnati. I have family there and went one time as a kid. Everyone always said what a great venue it is to watch tennis up close. Since we weren’t planning anything else, I decided this was the year. We had a quick trip. My cousin scored excellent seats for the first day of matches and we all had a great time. Our seats gave us access to “The Racquet Club”, pardon us. Little Mark was determined to lounge there. It was cooler and quiet and relaxing. They had free water up there (I found that out AFTER I spent $11.50 on 3 bottles of water-GRR).I was so satisfied when he finally got his chance, he was eyeing up these leather couches all day but they were always occupied.

It’s wild how fast 20 years has flown by. I realized that it’s the longest I’ve done anything.

I won’t get too syrupy here. Not my style but I do feel pure gratitude to have Mark.

The Director

Hannah shot and edited a movie for a library contest. My niece entered the contest last year with a friend and on the spur of the moment asked if my girls would do it with her instead. I think all the kids did a great job but I realize I’m biased.

I truly had no input whatsoever. I couldn’t help them do ANYTHING since I was preparing for a week away with Luke for a tennis tournament. They did it all on their own.

Enjoy and Have a Great Weekend!

Back Home

I retrieved Hannah from her extended retreat with my aunt. Re-entry will be challenging for her but I’m sooooo happy to have everyone under the same roof again.

How Hannah has been spending her time

I know the time she spent was constructive and renewing and an experience she’ll cherish forever. My aunt is becoming more limited in her mobility and her short-term memory. Her overall health seems good but her limitations may affect her ability to live independently for very much longer.

July will continue to be a relatively heavy travel and busy baseball month for us so I’ll be writing short snippets here as time allows. I’m also working on another project which I hope to finish and share soon.

I MISS MY GIRLS!

Hannah and Kate at the brook

(The girls will kill me that I chose this outdated photo but I love it!)

Hannah and Kate have been away all week and I just plain miss them!

Hannah is on her annual summer visit with my aunt who lives near Gettysburg. Kate was invited on vacation with my brother and his family and her bff cousin-LUCKY! Actually, my brother offered to take any 2 of my children but for many reasons, Kate drew the long straw.

It has been quiet around here and I’ve been able to get a few things done but I’ll be so happy when we’re all under the same roof. I wrote about how much I missed Mark when he was away for just one night. I knew that the end of the school year would have the children flung all over. I had visions of super-productive days with me finishing lots of projects. That didn’t happen but like I said, I am getting some things done and enjoying the break in running around getting this one here and that one there. Not making the trip to pick Hannah up at the bus in the afternoon has made it feel like I have HOURS to prepare dinner.

I feel like bread without butter, a ship without a sail, a dog without a tail (one that’s supposed to have a tail), peanut butter without jelly, macaroni without the cheese….you get the idea.

Have a great weekend.

A Review of Skyzone Trampoline Park

Dodgeball at Skyzone

Dodgeball at Skyzone

If you haven’t heard of Skyzone yet, it’s a cool trampoline park franchise. One just opened near us and Mark was anxious to go there to celebrate his birthday. Hannah had a couple of finals and Kate had to babysit so Mark and Luke each invited a friend.

Mark stalked the website daily and watched youtube videos about it over and over. I admit, it looked awesome. In person it was better than I expected. There are 5 huge areas of multiple trampoline grids including an open jump area, 2 dodge ball areas, a foam pit and a basketball area with 2 separate height hoops.

skyzone action 2

I guess homeschooled kids CAN play dodgeball

We arrived at about 4 on a weekday and most schools are still in session around here so it was an ideal time. The boys had most areas to themselves when they were in them and were sucking wind within 20 minutes. The foam pit had a short line but after about an hour of constant jumping, I think the short wait provided a perfect rest.

We opted to jump for 2 hours. It was only $3 more each for the extra 30 minutes. 1 hour is definitely long enough for younger kids (under 7 or 8). If it hadn’t been Mark’s birthday, I probably would have opted for the 90 minutes which would have been plenty but all the boys were happy to jump the extra 30 minutes.

They have a small cafe with mostly drinks and bag snacks. They order pizza from a local delivery place for birthday parties. In retrospect, limited food options is a good idea. Since it was after school, all the boys were pretty hungry after about an hour but they all agreed, they didn’t want to take the time to eat and they didn’t want to jump with anything in their stomachs. There is a water fountain which is perfect. I’d definitely save the eating for afterward.

All the employees at the place were pleasant and friendly with the kids and were very well-trained. They enforced the rules which probably reduces the risk of injury.

Speaking of injury, it is easy to see how injuries could happen frequently. Every jumper under 18 must have a waiver signed by a parent. In the case of the 2 friends who joined us, their parents filled out a waiver form online and submitted it. When we arrived, all of our waivers were in the system and there was no problem. I have heard that they will sometimes contact the parent to confirm the release.

The padded area between the trampolines cover the support bars and I don’t think they provide enough cushion. Also, if kids are used to doing tricks on a bigger trampoline surface at home, these mats are smaller, with the exception of a few longer, runway-type mats. The other potential hazard is a foot sliding down between the trampoline and cushion on the side walls. Like I said, though, I think the employees are vigilant and really enforce the rules in a pleasant way to reduce the risk of injury. While the potential hazard is real, I’m not sure it’s any greater than swimming or diving. Mark broke his collar bone last summer just running in our yard when his foot his a divot-so there you go.

Overall, it was a great experience and I would definitely go again. I’ll be biting my nails the whole time but I’ll let them go. I’ll probably take my own kids back again this summer since the girls didn’t get to try it.

Today is the last day of school for all of my public (charter) schooled kids. Hannah has a half day and I had pleasure of driving her to the bus stop this morning. I never mind this since it gives us a chance to talk. She said she felt like the year flew by.

Just before she got out of the car, she reached into her bag and handed me this……..

Handmade by Hannah

Handmade by Hannah

…it’s a “thank you” for me and Mark. In the note she expressed her appreciation for the sacrifices we’ve made to support her attendance at the performing arts charter school she attends. She also bought us a gift card for a restaurant. What a sweetie.

Here’s the thing…our sacrifice has been minor compared to hers. She spends 3 hours on a bus everyday. I haven’t told her this yet, but every other day on the bus is the equivalent of a full day at school for most kids. What’s most amazing is that she’s NEVER complained about it. She rarely complains about anything.

This girl never fails to surprise me in the best ways. This morning was no exception.

When Hannah returns from her annual visit to my aunt’s house, I’m looking forward to just being with her at home.
